This third printing preserves identical material in the main body of the manuscript, with the only difference being an expanded bibliography in the “Note to the Third Edition.” The first edition was published with the help of a grant from the Canadian Federation for the Humanities, using funds provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
